Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon allspice
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar, divided
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 cups peeled, cored, and diced apples (about 2 medium apples)
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5 inch loaf pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
- In a large bowl, cream together 1 cup of the granulated sugar and the softened butter until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Gently fold in the diced apples.
- Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly.
- Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
- While the bread is baking, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Add more milk if needed to reach desired consistency.
- Once the bread is out of the oven, let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Drizzle the glaze over the cooled apple fritter bread.
Notes
- For extra spice, you can add a pinch of ground cloves to the dry ingredients.
- Ensure your apples are evenly diced for consistent baking.
- The glaze can be adjusted to your sweetness preference by adding more or less powdered sugar.
- This Amish apple fritter bread is best served fresh but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
