Description

This soft Amish apple fritter bread is a comforting loaf baked with tender, spiced apples and topped with a sweet glaze, capturing the essence of autumn.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar, divided
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups peeled, cored, and diced apples (about 2 medium apples)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together 1 cup of the granulated sugar and the softened butter until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. Gently fold in the diced apples.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly.
  8. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. While the bread is baking, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Add more milk if needed to reach desired consistency.
  10. Once the bread is out of the oven, let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled apple fritter bread.

Notes

  • For extra spice, you can add a pinch of ground cloves to the dry ingredients.
  • Ensure your apples are evenly diced for consistent baking.
  • The glaze can be adjusted to your sweetness preference by adding more or less powdered sugar.
  • This Amish apple fritter bread is best served fresh but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
